British Gas Connected Homes is a UK Internet of Things success story. In this talk, Jim described how a 200-year old utility company has given birth to one of the UK’s largest Internet of Things consumer businesses. With connected sensors delivering an ever increasing variety and volume of data, being able to apply Data Science at scale in real-time is critical to British Gas Connected Homes’ vision of the truly intelligent home. Using real-life examples, Jim described the approach Connected Homes are taking to make sense of this data and use it to deliver customer value.

About Jim Anning

Jim-Anning-600x431Jim Anning is head of Data and Analytics at British Gas Connected Homes. His team manage all aspects of data from Connected Homes’ products including Hive Active Heating and MyEnergy, analysing it to help improve services and developing machine learning and artificial intelligence algorithms to give customers the best experience from connected products. Originally an electronics engineer, Jim has held a variety of technology and leadership roles, in the BBC; the Oil & Gas Industry; Educational Application Development; and Utilities. In 2009 he left the corporate world, going back to his roots in software and data to co-found a web startup, before joining Connected Homes in April 2013.
